London Removal Health and Safety Policy
London Removal is committed to providing professional moving services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures that guide how we plan and deliver our removals, packing, loading, transport and storage activities.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We recognise that removal work can involve physical handling, heavy lifting, driving, working in confined spaces, and operating in varied locations across homes, offices and commercial premises. We are committed to managing these risks responsibly, preventing accidents and ill health, and promoting a culture where safety is an integral part of every task.
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety performance and for ensuring that adequate resources, equipment, information and supervision are provided. Every team member is expected to play an active part in maintaining a safe working environment during all removal services.
Legal Responsibilities
London Removal complies with applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards relevant to removal and transport operations. We monitor changes in legal requirements and good practice to keep our procedures up to date and to ensure that our staff understand their responsibilities.
We require our employees, contractors and any third parties working with us to follow our safety rules, use equipment correctly and co operate in promoting safe systems of work at all times.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before undertaking removal work, we assess the risks associated with each service. This can include assessing access routes, stairways, lifts, parking arrangements, loading areas, floor conditions, weather conditions, and any special requirements for fragile, heavy or high value items.
We develop safe systems of work to control identified risks, including safe lifting techniques, team lifting arrangements, use of handling aids, safe stacking and loading of vehicles, and secure restraining of goods in transit. When conditions change or new risks are identified, we review and update our assessments and working methods.
Training, Competence and Supervision
All London Removal staff receive appropriate training for the tasks they perform. This includes manual handling practices, safe use of removal equipment, vehicle safety, basic hazard awareness and emergency procedures. New employees are given an induction that covers our Health and Safety Policy and site specific instructions.
Supervisors are responsible for monitoring work standards, checking that safe procedures are followed and providing additional guidance or refresher training when necessary. We encourage staff to report any concerns or suggestions for improving safety in our removal services.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of removal work and is carefully managed to reduce the risk of injury. Our teams are instructed to assess the weight, size and shape of items before lifting and to refuse to lift loads that cannot be handled safely. Wherever possible, we use handling equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps and ramps to minimise physical strain.
All equipment is selected for suitability, inspected regularly and maintained in good working order. Only trained personnel may operate any specialist equipment. Damaged or defective items are taken out of use immediately and reported for repair or replacement.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard and checked regularly to ensure they are safe, roadworthy and suitable for the loads they carry. Drivers are expected to follow road traffic laws, drive responsibly and plan routes that take account of time, traffic, parking and loading conditions.
Loads are packed and secured so that they do not move during transport, and access to exits, doors and emergency equipment within the vehicle is kept clear. Drivers must report any defects or incidents promptly so that appropriate action can be taken.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working at customer homes, offices or commercial sites, our teams take care to protect people and property. We plan access routes, keep walkways clear, and where necessary use signage or simple barriers to mark off work areas. We aim to minimise noise, disruption and obstruction, especially in shared or public spaces.
Protective covers, floor runners and other protective materials are used where appropriate to prevent damage to premises and to reduce the risk of slips and trips. Our staff are trained to work respectfully and safely in occupied buildings and to co operate with any on site safety rules.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and must be used. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, high visibility clothing or other protective items. Staff are responsible for looking after their equipment, wearing it when required and reporting any damage or need for replacement.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. This allows us to investigate what happened, take corrective action and prevent recurrence. We keep records of incidents and use them to review and improve our safety performance.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as injury, fire, spillage, vehicle collision or damage to property. Our staff are trained to respond calmly, prioritise safety, seek assistance where needed and follow the procedures of any premises where they are working.
Health, Welfare and Occupational Health
We recognise the physical nature of removal work and take reasonable steps to support the health and wellbeing of our employees. This includes managing workloads, encouraging rest breaks where appropriate, and providing guidance on fitness for work. Staff are expected to inform management of any health issues that may affect their ability to work safely.
We do not tolerate the use of alcohol or illegal substances while working or driving. Medication that may affect alertness or physical ability must be disclosed so that suitable adjustments can be considered.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
London Removal is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. We review this policy regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legislation or best practice. Lessons learned from incidents, feedback from customers and staff, and developments in safe working methods are used to refine our procedures.
This Health and Safety Policy applies to all London Removal activities and forms part of the terms under which we provide our removal services. All employees and contractors are required to read, understand and follow this policy as a condition of working with us.
